I threw a big party for Parker when he turned 1, and afterwards promptly made Steve swear to never let me do that again. So the beginning of December comes with Lyla's first birthday rapidly approaching and I bring up a party to Steve. He reminded me of his promise 2 years ago, and I told him it would be fine as long as I didn't have to transport the whole party to a nearby park 20 minutes before starting like we did with Parker. That was the nightmare part. I kinda like the party prep with the food and decor. It's stressful, yes, but I enjoy it! I've also learned that I maybe sorta should have rethought a December baby...the two busiest weeks of the year made it a little chaotic, but again, some of us thrive on that. No but really, no more December babies...
Parker helped with the party prep. A little. Making marshmallows for hot cocoa and caramel cider.
I made pretzel bites with spicy cheese dipping sauce, chicken salad croissants, feta and veggies puffed pastries, bacon-wrapped cream cheese jalapeƱos, a boxed cake mix for Lyla (priorities here, she wasn't going to eat it! And really, boxed cake mixes are tasty, lesbehonest), doughnuts, crackers and cookies for the kids, glazed doughnuts, and my cinnamon salted caramel chocolate cake. Note to self: get a new dip-warmer...preferably a non-bright-red-tomato one. I didn't get a chance to get pictures with her little-people friends (and our big-people friends and family), but thank you to everyone who came! So fun to celebrate such a happy little occasion in our lives with you all. Cake pictures courtesy of Spencer, a special thank you to him...they're gorgeous.
This girl has completely stolen our hearts. Steve was a little nervous for a girl, but I think it's completely safe to say that he absolutely could not love her more. He talks differently to her than he did with Parker because she's his little girl. My tiny little baby is the giggliest, happiest, smartest little thing. She's also pretty scrappy, just like her momma. She started toddling around right at her birthday, then within a week or two she was steadily walking around like the owned the place (now, a month later, she's practically running). It's so funny to see her walk because Parker didn't walk until 17 months, and with her being especially little, we are SO not used to teeny people walking around us! Some days she loves certain foods, other days she throws it off her tray. She takes sips of her sip cup and tosses it away onto the floor. I can count on her to eat smoothies, oatmeal, rice, bananas, spaghetti, oranges, mango, pineapple, blended-up soups, homemade bread, cheese, turkey, refried beans, and probably a few other things. She says "uh-oh" (over and over) when anything drops to the floor, "da-da" when she hears the front door open (when Steve does get home, she crawls or toddles over as fast as she can to the front door, yelling "da-da!" the whole way...quickly after Parker screaming "daddy!"), and her most favorite thing to say (besides very intent and sometimes self-amusing jibberish) is "no!". She thinks it's funny when I tell her to stop doing something she knows she is not supposed to be doing, she claps on command or when she feels it's appropriate, she opens and closes her fists to say bye-bye, she loves carrying around her baby dollies and Elmo, Cookie, or her bunny. Loves baths, hates getting dressed and lotioned up and changing her diaper. Hates the carseat and sitting still in the cart while shopping (I've resorted to keeping her in the basket part most of the time while she squishes all of our food). She loves to be lifted up to see what we're doing up at the table or in the kitchen while I'm cooking. She loves the remote and our phones and knows they are off-limits. Loves the park, crawling up stairs, sometimes likes crawling in the grass. She's recently taken up gifting us a toy (cars, especially), taking it back, then regifting it. Then whispering about it to us. She's my favorite little girl and feel so incredibly lucky to be her momma. Her open-mouth kisses where she says "mah" are my favorite, besides kissing her little cheeks. Please stay my little Lyla Bean forever!
