April 1, about 30 minutes after Steve had left for work, I get a text saying he had to lay the bike down, he was OK, and wanted me to come pick him up. I responded thinking it was a controlled incident, a slow laying-down-of-the-bike, and he just need a ride to work.
Wrong.
A truck swerved in front of him and sent him flying and tumbling into the pavement, head first.
So when I pulled up into the parking lot with the kids in the back and saw him sitting on the pavement, his gloves torn-through, his slacks, shoes, and belt destroyed, hair messed up, I could tell this was more serious than he had led on. I hugged him tight, fought a lump in my throat, and kept asking him if he was OK. After finishing dealing with police and the guy who hit him (who I hope was in shock, because he showed absolutely no emotion, didn't ask if he was OK, didn't seem to care....it took a lot to bite my tongue), I took him to the ER to get checked out. He was in quite a bit of pain and was limping while walking very slowly. We were sent home a couple hours later.
After two more ER visits, X-rays, CT head, MRI knee, labs, sputum sample, and two doctors' visits later, he sustained several fibular head (the top of his fibula--leg, not his head) fractures, R knee sprain, hematoma under his toenail they had to drain, coughing up bloody sputum that lasted a couple weeks, deep bruising, road rash, post-concussion syndrome (forgetfulness, amnesia, headache), nightmares, insomnia, and extreme vertigo. Things are slowly returning to normal (a month later), but he's still dealing with some of the issues.
There were several times where if I really let myself indulge in the what-ifs, I would lose it. Or the first couple weeks I would drive by where the accident happened, I would get emotional. We are both counting our blessings as we realize how blessed we are that he is still here, and doing extremely well considering just how bad it could have been.
Apparently not a fan of dinner.
Christmas present from Dave and Katie. #riggins #texasforever #cleareyesfullheartscantlose
This little one is 4 1/2 months. Some nights she sleeps 8:30ish-7am with a dream feed, other nights she wakes up every 20-30 minutes from 3:30-7am. It's great. I love it.
As soon as we are in our house at the end of THIS MONTH (eeeeeek!!!!!!), we are doing some tough love and going to help little Lyla Bean learn how to sleep all night every night. Can't wait! Her naps have definitely improved, she usually does three 1.5-2 hour naps a day, plus a little nap around dinner. She's still rolling occasionally from her belly to her back, but still only two-three times from her back to her belly. At her 4-month checkup she was as smiley as could be and weighed 12 lbs 15 oz. They never told me what percentile that was, but when I got home I looked online and apparently she's pretty tiny, like 5th percentile tiny.
She grabs things and manipulates them and brings them directly to her mouth. I don't think Parker was quite as oral and she's been so far. She squeals and screeches and gurgles at the top of her lungs, Steve and I love it.
I had just laid her in her chair after feeding, burping, and changing her: all physical needs met, right? After a few minutes she looks up at Steve and me and starts giving us this pouty face. She'd pull herself together and save face....then go back to the pouty face with a quivering chin. We'd never seen her do that before so I wanted to see what she'd do! She did that about 3-4 times until I couldn't help but pick her up and cuddle her sweet little body. She's generally pretty happy and cuddly, more so than I remember Parker being.
Mid road trip stop to feed Lyla. I seriously love the nothingness that is Texas landscape.
(although we have seen quite a bit of lush, green rolling hills during these road trips between Lawton and Dallas that I never thought existed)
She's over dairy.
Post-concert high with some crazy eyes! So proud of Mom and Kayla and their performance in the Millenial Choir! I was seriously blown away after the first song, they sounded amazing. It was a patriotic theme with Glenn Beck narrating stories of American history between songs. Steve is thinking about joining when we move down, but he's not sure with how much time it'll end up taking.
They got all the singing talent! And I'm wearing heels while Janene is wearing flats.
Such pleasant weather Oklahoma has.
Reppin the Cali life, wearing a shirt from my brother on his mission there.
Easters at Grandma and Grandpa's!
He wasn't as into this year as I thought he'd be! Maybe we should have shown them what was in the eggs before they started so they'd have a real incentive. Parker was being all selective and taking his time. The kid did not get it.
We can see who has their priorities straight.
If he's not whining when he's forced to hold her for a picture, he's cracking an egg over her head.
He does love her. Just today a football she was playing with tumbled away and he went and picked it up for her. Sweetest ever!
She has learned the art of ferociously blowing raspberries.
Mother's lounge date with her twin cousins, Charlotte and Ethan. Awwww yeah!
And yes. Proof that it happened once. The end.
